It’s so toxic. And the worse part is we grew up internalising we are stupid because we can’t do stuff our parents can seemingly do on a regular basis. 😭

And for the love of god, don’t tell young girls to learn how to cook for the sake of a hypothetical future spouse. It’s better to tell kids that it’s a life skill they need to learn or they’d be living on toasts & instant noodles or spending a fortune on mediocre take-outs. 😭

I didn’t learn til I move out and was away from the toxicity of it all. I read recipe books and watched YouTube videos. In fact, I’m still learning but I’m proud to say that I can cook better than those A-holes combined now. Ha! 🖕

This was prior to the prevalence of cheap internet connection at home. Young me would just stand in the kitchen, on the brink of tears, a ball of anxiety until my Mom (or Aunt) comes into the kitchen, shoos me away, calling me stupid for not being able to abrakadabra a chow mein out the stove 2/

I’ve been told a few times “I can’t cook unlike you!” and I just want to say - I didn’t spawn into this world wielding a wok and a spatula. My family’s idea of “teaching” (at least the women) was to send me to the kitchen and tell me to cook a dish with no instructions whatsoever. 1/

I’m eating a sloppy joe sandwich at 5AM for *coughs* “taste-testing” because I just made it for the hubbers’ work lunch. 😏
