Retired teacher, poet (working on it), reader, animal lover, union thug forever. I almost cried today when End of the Line started playing in the car. And yes, marriage a couple of years after retiring was a really good decision.

Or just that he doesn’t care if it’s part of his job. He doesn’t want to do it.

Opinion | Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics the Right Way

Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics the Right Way www.nytimes.com/2025/09/11/o... didn’t agree with much Charlie Kirk said. I thought he was arrogant and incendiary. But he should have been able to speak. Political violence harms all of us.

I wrote this over the last couple of days. Maybe I should have called it Independence Day.

Thank you! The CFPB and NLRB are extremely important. Big businesses don’t seem to do things out if the goodness of their hearts. We need watchdogs.

Hi Shamus!

I read this for the music in it, then reread it for the meaning.

It feels like a prayer to me.

Thank you.

I’ve been trying to post poems I love or art when I realize I feel anxious about the political situation.

Lovely.

When I think of St. Paul, I think of Virgil Flowers and well-dressed Lucas Davenport.

I bet they would be very happy to see President Klobuchar in the near future. (We can’t allow a third term for 47.).

I got it a few years ago when Michael Connelly (author of the Harry Bosch books) pushed the sale of the shirts for his charity. It was through Bonfire. I’ll try to see if there are more available.

I’ve always thought Harry’s motto was a corollary of β€˜a jury to one is an injury to all.’

I think I have t-shirts that say both.

When I read Charlotte’s Web to my students, I’d get teary, sometimes actually have tears running down my cheeks, when I read the ending. What a writer EB White was. I usually read one of his other books, Trumpet of the Swan, instead. That one is special, too.

A poem by Wole Soyinka, Nigerian Nobel Prize winner.

The poem that keeps coming to my mind is Yeats’ The Second Coming, but I wanted to read something that had no connection to what’s upsetting me each day.
I love reading Soyinka’s work.

Thank you. I hadn’t heard of him. Now I’ll find more of his work.

This girl makes me happy.

I realized I have been getting anxious with one thing after another from the Trump /Musk administration. I decided to post pictures of art or other things that make me calm or happy when I feel that way. (So no photos of my awesome dentist.)

I’m replying to myself because I can’t figure out how to edit on Bluesky. Bought was intended to be β€˜but.’ But actually, though bought doesn’t work too well grammatically, it does kind of make sense. In a way.

Post-Constitutional?!

No, we don’t. It’s still there. Bought, Musk, Trump, et al don’t want to live by it.
Didn’t Trump pledge to uphold it?

Uh, oh, I’m in trouble. I used to (I’m retired now) share a voter registration form with my students, and explain why it’s important to vote.

I wish this wasn’t true. I wish it had turned out that my reasons for not voting for him were wrong. But he’s worse than that.

Great point! P.S. punctuation marks go inside the quotation mark.

You’re right about the week. One stunning, horrifying action after another.
I hope something is brewing that is positive. I am retired and not about to run for office, but I want someone to vote FOR, not just against.

I can’t figure out how to say something about the photo as part of the post. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ.
Oh, well. The idea of the foreigner or β€˜the other’ as scapegoat is really apt today, in this time of illegal aliens being β€˜bogeymen.’

I’m glad you liked it. It’s one I reread.
The line,
β€œAll women are not Helen,
I know that,
But have Helen in their hearts,”
Brings tears to my eyes.
Actually the section on not finding the news in poems does, too.

The first one that pops into my mind is William Carlos Williams’ Asphodel, That Greeny Flower.

It’s a long poem. I’ve been trying to find one I can copy and paste here, but it’s not working (I’m brand new to Bluesky.). Frustrating. But it’s worth finding and reading.
