Requirements engineering (speaking to the #HCI crowd) is the software engineering equivalent of "How do you know you've built what you were supposed to?" It involves talking to users and listing out what the end result must do - lots of overlap with HCI. It's how I've found a home in a SE department

I have new SE Education research showing the differences between how professionals and students view requirements engineering. RE's tough without experience and students aren't getting it outside of the classroom. Alumni report RE is interwoven with many SE areas.
