Thanks!

The story has some well-explored deep themes. The foreshadowing was solid, and not too on the nose. I feel like this book only scratched the surface of a much richer worldbuilding that would be worth diving into. Hopefully, the second instalment did just that.

Just finished the first book on my #queerscifi February TBR: Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell. I loved the protagonists, especially Jainan’s character arc. The arranged marriage and miscommunication tropes were handled really well.

And I'm halfway through Blasted Research by Coffee Quills. I love post-apocalyptic fiction, and I love it even more when it’s queer. Asexual enby rep, polyamorous rep, and an undercurrent of government lies 👀

I'm also nearly done with Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell. The protagonists are absolutely adorable! I'll probably finish today. It’s a solid exploration of the arranged marriage trope, and a good use of the miscommunication trope (which I usually dislike).

I've made decent progress on 3 books on my February #queerscifi TBR. I'm a third into The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers. It’s great to be back in the world of the Wayfarers series. I’m loving this instalment so far, and expecting to love it even more as the story progresses!

Action beats are another tool at your disposal, especially associated with the “new speaker, new line” convention. The action the speaker performs right before or after the dialogue, on the same line, is an implied indicator.

Context can provide the same information. If there are only two speakers present, using a new line for each person can reduce the need for dialogue tags to a minimum.

Of course, repeating the invisible “say” too many times can also draw attention to it. “Ask” can be a similarly neutral choice for questions. But not every line of dialogue needs a dialogue tag.

#writingtips
Repetition is usually frowned upon. But the verb “say” has become invisible to readers, so using it often in dialogue tags isn’t a problem. In fact, fancy verbs can have the opposite effect: they draw attention to themselves instead of disappearing to let the dialogue shine.

In the #WritingCommunity, diversity is our strength. Uplift queer and trans authors, writers of color, disabled storytellers and neurodivergent voices. Publishing still favors the same few; let's disrupt that and share stories that mirror the richness of our world.

To completely end my January reading wrap up, the eighth book I finished was The Lonely Skier, by Hammond Innes.
Post-WWII intrigue with an interesting premise. A
screenplay writer is sent under false pretences to spy
on the guests of a ski resort.

The covers for six of my books: The Young Necromancer’s Guide to Ghosts, Dragon Whisperer, Trueflame, Fireborn, Firebound, After the Dragon Raid. Text across the middle reads: Request them at your library!
Dark grey text on a beige background that reads: Get it at the library! Did you know you can ask your library to purchase books?
Free for you! Authors still get paid! Others get to read it as well! Support libraries! With a print mockup of The Dragon Next Door on a wooden shelf. #NessPromo
Want to support me without spending a dime? Request my books at your library! The library pays for their copy so I still get paid and you get to read it for free! Best part, others can enjoy it after you! 🌈📚 #booksky

Please. Authors and readers be aware of this. This is GREAT news for divesting from Amazon. Remember that buyers hold so much power and please support by buying from bookshop.org > Amazon. We are directly benefitted from purchases made outside of Amazon! And you get to pick the store that benefits!
