800 detainees are missing after being held in Alligator Alcatraz in July, showing no record of their location in ICE’s database.

Other detainees have been mistakenly deported or sent to detention centers thousands of miles away.

The cruelty is the point.

I can say, I never imagined the GOP would go along with eviscerating the first amendment’s freedom of speech. Sadly I’m not confused why… it about power and not principle.

The Democrats will be in charge again someday. And we will see the GOP’s selective outrage re-emerge.

Yet we have learned several lessons about how to deal with this tyrant, and we must practice them. Let me explain... https://robertreich.substack.com/p/sunday-thought-e69

I’m a Congressional Candidate. I Was Assaulted by ICE. An interview with Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old Democratic House candidate in Illinois, who was violently thrown to the ground twice at a peaceful protest in Illinois on Friday morning.

As I told @newrepublic.com, "Once last week, twice today, ICE has picked me up and thrown me on the ground. Honestly, it doesn’t compare to what our neighbors who are trapped inside the Broadview processing facility are going through. They’re committing crimes against humanity there."

I know we keep focusing on Colbert and Kimmel as we should, but we also need to remember there are hundreds of people who work for these shows who also just lost their jobs because of this bullshit, and most of them are probably not millionaires.

Stephen Colbert: β€œTonight we’re all Jimmy Kimmel…. With an autocrat, you can’t give an inch. If ABC thinks that this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naive, and clearly they've never read The Children's Book If You Give a Mouse A Kimmel.”

This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

If you're a firm conservative and you believe this path doesn't eventually lead to your own speech being censored by the Trump regime, you are sorely mistaken. That day is coming. I promise you.

And if you ignore that longterm consequence out of favor for short-term schadenfreude over someone liberal being censored by the government, you need to ask yourself whether you really support the First Amendment.

I'm not asking you to support liberal opinions or refrain from boycotts of entertainment you don't like. I may find that position ridiculous, but that's your right.

Boycott movies and shows. Boycott businesses. Criticize Kimmel and Colbert and everyone else you don't like. By all means, leverage your capital in the marketplace of ideas.

But the moment you support or enable the government to punish people with wrong opinions, it only becomes a matter of time before your own opinion is being punished by the government.

I don't give my money to anti-trans people. I don't watch their shows. I don't buy their products. I don't think they deserve my money or my attention. That's my right.

But if the government were to directly punish someone for expressing an anti-trans opinion, I would be the first in line to defend them. Even if I believe they're an insufferable clown, I will still defend their First Amendment rights.

Either you believe in First Amendment protections, or you don't. Either you believe the government has no business punishing someone's speech, or you don't.
