Agreed Siobhán, it's not a solution at all but then our leaders (the city and our Gov't) are contemptuous of us. Look at homeless figures, hospital waiting lists, 3rd level education costs. None of which ever seem to improve. We're not a serious people.

There's truth in that though. A wander around pristine squares in European capitals is a real eye opener when you look at how people treat public spaces here in general and it's reflected in behaviour - who hasn't experienced rudeness to outright hostility across all classes? A peasant mentality.
