Paved Roads & Paving the Way Forward: Women Peace Team in Hardan, Sinjar In Sinjar, a small village in Iraq, women are taking initiative to advocate for essential services in their community.

“We were survivors and now we are leaders."

While the pain endures, so does the determination to rebuild.

In the village of Hardan, Yazidi women are leading efforts to restore their community. Their work is a testament to grassroots leadership in the face of unimaginable loss.

🕯️Today marks 11 years since the Yazidi genocide.

In August 2014, ISIS launched a genocidal campaign against the Yazidi people in Sinjar. Thousands were killed, women and girls were abducted and enslaved, and entire communities were displaced — leaving deep scars that remain to this day.

🔹 Our staff facilitated a community security meeting to gather a better understanding of the status of the relationship b/t the rivaling communities. From there, our team identified strategies that could be implemented to mitigate future violence during food distributions.

Case Study 2️⃣: Meanwhile, in Akobo County, the outbreak of #conflict at a central food distribution site resulted in the complete suspension of the distribution site. Individuals, families, and communities uninvolved were unable to receive their food assistance as expected.

🔸 Consequently, the protection issues arising from generalized insecurity perpetuate a chronic cycle of #FoodInsecurity that can extend beyond years and generations. NP has been working alongside communities to address these challenges in Greater Ulang.

🗣️ As one community member explained, “People don’t cultivate because they fear that their crops will be destroyed or that they may be killed whilst they are cultivating due to issues of revenge.”

Case Study 1️⃣: In Greater Ulang, an area with fertile land and accessible river water, folks avoid engaging in agricultural practices out of fear for their #safety.

Restoring Education: Youth-Led Advocacy for Safe and Accessible Schools in Iraq How leaders of a youth peace team turned displacement into determination and brought classrooms back to life in Qaylan, Iraq.  The Youth Peace Team

✅ An official order was issued for the police to vacate the school, which meant that local children, like Madhi's nieces and nephews, no longer had to walk long distances to get to school!

The YPT’s success shows what #YouthLed, #nonviolent advocacy can accomplish.

Four members of the Youth Peace Team within Ba'aj district, Iraq, stand in front of a school that they advocated to reopen. This initiative was supported by NP.

🎒 A group of local #youth took decided to take action. With support from NP, Youth Peace Team (YPT) leaders confidently presented their concern: schools should be spaces for learning and NOT used as a base for authorities.

🏫 Upon return, more community members began noticing an injustice: schools abandoned as a result of the 2014 ISIS invasion were still being occupied by police officials.

🇮🇶 After years of living in displacement camps, Mahdi* returned to his hometown in Ba'aj, #Iraq with his sister’s family, including her school-aged children.
