But itβs just as important to know the number of lives saved β even though it is harder to estimate and involves much larger uncertainty.
My Data Insight today includes this chart of some estimates.
We now have some data on the environmental impact per AI prompt:
Gemini: 0.00024 kWh & 0.26 mL water
ChatGPT: 0.0003 kWh & 0.38 mL
...the same energy as one Google search in 2008 & 6 drops of water. Seems to be improving, too: Google reports a 33x drop in energy use per prompt in a year.

AEA Statement on Dismissal of BLS Comm.
"The independence of the federal statistical agencies is essential to the proper functioning of a modern economy. Accurate, timely, and impartial statistics are the foundation upon which households, businesses, and policymakers make critical decisions."
The initial estimate of job change for a month is based on the growth or loss of jobs at the businesses that have reported their data. Generally, BLS assumes that the employment situation at businesses that had reported is representative of the situation at those that had not yet reported. BLS continues to collect outstanding reports from the businesses in the sample as it prepares a second and then a third estimate for the month. With each subsequent estimate, more businesses have provided their information. In 2012, the average collection rate at the time of the third estimate for a month was 94.6 percent. (See chart 1.)
Why do the jobs numbers get revised?
our markets and policymakers want data NOW but employer data dribbles in over months
1st estimate is based on the 75% of employers who respond promptly
Updates occur as more data rolls in: 95% response rate by final revision 1/N

Research findings with p-values marginally less than 0.05 attract 60 to 110% higher Altmetric scores than those with p-values marginally above 0.05.

Many junior scholars struggle with managing a research pipeline.
So, academics: how do you do manage your pipeline?
How many projects are you working on at one time?
How do you know if you have too many/too few projects?
Other tips that you have?
Discussions of "brain drain" often neglect the many channel by which emigration can boost human capital in origin countries. I find this figure wonderfully enlightening.
