When you’ve lost Ted Cruz…

I wrote a book about Theodore Roosevelt and the early progressives' battle against tariffs in 2014. The hardest part was making archaic tariff policy interesting to 21st century readers. And now look where we are.

No one imagined that a future president would dramatically raise tariffs across the board and singlehandedly trigger a global recession.

In the old days, presidents didn’t have so much economic power. Congress controlled tariff policy. Much later, in the 1970s, after tariffs had become economically insignificant, Congress delegated tariff power to the White House so the President could quickly respond to individual trade conflicts.

Among all the insane and immoral things Trump has done, the tariffs will cause the most widespread and profound global suffering. It’s just incredible that one man’s whim has so much power to create ruin.

The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.
