Herbalist, chemist, firefighter, emt, reader of trashy novels. Currently addicted to iNaturalist; there will be a new personal fad in a few months or years or something. And yeah, my name's Allison, but I prefer betonica up there in lights.

My account here is pretty quiet... because I never post. And yes, I know this is just a meme swiped from That Other Platform. But I liked it.

I went back to school when I was 37. It was *great!* I was there because I really wanted to be, not there because it was just the thing to do. I had so much fun getting my masters that I went on to get a PhD, finishing when I was 46, I think. Such a splendid time.

I don't have a recipe, but my mom makes the BEST gingerbread on the planet. With chunks of apple. Amazing.

Whoah. The three articles I wrote when getting my PhD are on this stolen-for-plagiarism-machines list. (Does the article come through? I'm still not getting the hang of bluesky...). I'll add my name to the class action suit.

Whoah!! Three of my science papers from my PhD are in here! I'm adding my name, not that anyone knows who I am.

Also, assign some of those interesting questions (often tangents) to the students as research, and have them get back to the class themselves, later.
Mostly, though - once I start talking on a topic you can't shut me up, so teaching almost anything I'm moderately prepared in is easy, and fun.

I found the classes who asked a lot of questions and really engaged in the work were the best, for me. Very energizing. But also: what if I didn't have an answer? Someone I knew kept a blank book in the classroom; some/most/all questions he couldn't answer were written down, and addressed later.

I didn't actually have the same feelings about men and women - at *all*. But it was a good comeback.
Now, Ace seems to be "new". Shocking number of people don't believe it's possible, despite probable existence from, again, the dawn of time.

Ah. Even in 1995 I'd been immersed in it for at least a decade (and, of course, it's been around probably since the dawn of human history). I once had a smart-ass lesbian tell me that bi's were just wishy-washy and couldn't make up their minds. I said no, we just weren't prejudiced. :D

No, I'm not for war, either. I'm sort of amazed (and horrified) that we haven't evolved past it, by now.

Posted elsenet. I rarely post politics, but just in case anyone was in any doubt. Better put it here, too, in the echo-chamber ;)
Cousin pointed out that it leaves out being against war, so that post is next.

the core idea that can radicalize people is so simple:

there is enough.

there is enough food to feed everyone. enough resources to house everyone. money and technology and medicine to stop the suffering of people around the globe.

once you accept that there's only one question:

why don't we?

Such gorgeous stuff! I just ordered one.
I hope your medical issues take a turn for the better.
I hope your birthday is great! (Being an herbalist, I just *have* to suggest hawthorn - though I recommend it to absolutely everyone over the age of 20; if you're up to it, look it up/try it out.)

Wait. When would you put "The Gilded Age"? Books with this green dye were published from roughly 1800 to 1900, so I guess they would be a good option. Beautiful green dresses had a shorter lifespan (because of the shorter lifespan of their occupants), but still "It won't hurt *me*" ....

Probably a bit early, but Scheele's green / Paris green is a really lovely color. The Victorians thought so, too. I want a poison green book, personally, (wear gloves!!) but they've become rather rare.

omg. I had this when I was young, and *loved* it. I tried replicating it a few decades back, but without any recipe or instructions. Definite failure. I look forward to snagging a taste.

I'm laughing at whatever idiot decided to post that picture under "edible mushrooms". I mean. Surely even if you're not a mushroom expert, you've got *some* idea that those are on the danger-danger list??

(We had in our Constitution, or something, that we could simply opt out in, I think, 1976 - 200 years after joining, maybe? I was disappointed when the appointed year went by without comment.)

Back around 1985? I was in line to deposit something for the (tiny) company I worked for. Guy at the window was objecting to a series of excessive charges from an overdraw. Cashier said he had no right to complain because he should never have overdrawn his account. Never do business w/ BofA. Never.

I didn't know you could do that. I jumped through a few hoops to block him (I'd only blocked people who tried to connect, before this). Now that I've blocked him, I suppose reporting is off the table?

It is time for state and local governments to arrest masked officers who won’t produce warrants and who have no proof someone is undocumented.

Kidnappers should be arrested and indicted and tried for kidnapping and serve the many years such sentences carry.
