We discuss ways the foundations of UD can be applied more generally to department culture, conferences, outreach events, and academia as a whole to make STEM fields more inclusive.

In this paper, we illustrate how the concepts of UD are relevant outside of architecture and the creation of curricula by highlighting examples of norms that exist in the field of astronomy that create barriers for disabled folks.

One goal with this article has been to celebrate the work we've done in including Deaf folks and Signing communities in astronomy activities. Another goal has been to let the (hearing-dominated) astronomy community know how to better include Deaf and Signing folks going forward.

I'm an astronomer who grew up in a Deaf family in which American Sign Language is our home language. Throughout my career I've never met a Deaf astronomer. I'd like to see that change.
