During court cross-examination a forensic lipreader may be asked about margin of error in the assignment.

All cases are undertaken without context (eg knowledge of the crime or reading any statements). This prevents bias creeping in.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published the CCTV Code of Practice. This is guidance on the correct use of CCTV systems. Compliance with this code is vital to ensure that any footage is admissible as evidence in court.

For CCTV to be admissible in court, it must be obtained lawfully. For example, the CCTV systems (including signage) installed for legitimate reasons such as crime prevention or public safety.

With good CCTV, the forensic lipreader can create a structured report compliant with legal standards, showing methodology, reasoning and limits.

CCTV footage as evidence is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. All footage must be processed lawfully to protect the rights and freedoms of individuals.

The rejection criteria for CCTV footage are segments with poor pixellation, blurring or obstruction. Forensic lipreaders who cannot sight any lip movement cannot create a transcript.

Without proper analysis, informal interpretation becomes highly unreliable. Quality forensic lipreading replaces assumptions with demonstrable evidence.

Forensic lipreading can be misunderstood. CCTV conditions such as low resolution, compression, poor angles can obscure these details.

A court-admissible transcript highlights any disputes related to conflicting accounts which would otherwise go unnoticed.

Forensic lipreading can find vital information from muted or poor quality footage. For example, a conversation in a bar or an argument in the street.

CCTV interpretation with forensic lipreading supports court-admissible testimony; transcripts can clarify intent, identity or motive in all cases.

A CCTV transcript can help legal firms win cases. CCTV footage without sound can be a vital witness to a crime scene.

“Les yeux sont le miroir de l’âme” (the eyes are the mirror of the soul)…just as lipreading uses the power of sight to access words.

The French proverb, “lire les lèvres, c’est entendre avec les yeux…” translates as “…to read lips is to hear with the eyes…”

I think this is a succinct representation of lipreader friendship.
