Single ended amp for the sustainer is just fine. Do Not Omit the Zobel network.
2.5 watt LM380. Auto gain control. Hand wired thingamajig.
12 volt via the guitar cable.
Extra knob for sustainer gain, pushes from pre-oscillation to full self oscillation.
You know what would be great? Not destroying days worth of work in seconds.
Next up: yet another amp board for the sustainer.
Well, that's a heartbeat. Sure looks better than the Veyz crap. Works better too.
Amp chip isn't even getting warm with the 4 ohm load.
And there's the finished thing minus screws and springs. No need to be fancy, no need to access for service. More Water Weld holds it in *and* reinforces the tabs.
3.9 ohms by my meter.
Cooked one a *little* too long in the wax pot, oops. It will work fine( special toan ?).
That what covers are really good for. Waxed, polyimide tape. Test drop right into the cover.
Soldering and shielding up next.
Arbor press used to push magnets in, with special attention to polarity.

09.03.2025 22:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Sustainiac circuit has also taken me to school in how it handles the audio ground. Comes in using the same ground as power. Leaves the first buffer using a reference voltage as ground. Stays that way.
Never seen that before, and learning why it's that way has toasted my walnut.
Today I learned why a transistor is named a ...transistor.
I really have to wonder how it is possible that I have not encountered this information before.
The Sustainiac amp circuit uses two transistors in two different places... as voltage controlled resistors.
Not focking around dept:
I have "cloned" the original Sustainiac amp board, but modified it to use all contemporary parts and run on 5 volts.
Electronic phase reversal with phase "slew". Differential class AB amp chip SSM2211
Don't use an LM386 sustainer circuit. It only ends in tears.
The last electronics panel for the guitar cracked. This acrylic is thicker and more elastic. It just happens to be translucent.

LM386 cannot take reverse polarity. Electrolytic caps die horribly. I think the jfet doesn't gaf.
It hurt.
Take two: always include reverse polarity protection especially if you don't think you need it.
Bonus: tighter = quieter
Also took the (shiddy) paint off of the "driver" because a white accent doesn't look bad. I'll change the truss rod cover back to white too.
A lesson learned with much hurt: Always include reverse polarity protection - especially if you don't think you need it.
It's a good thing that iteration always improves things.
Here's an interesting article. I lifted the buffer and AGC circuits right off of this article, I used an op amp I have on hand instead of the one in the schematic.
