Is that S1 as in international A-level? Certainly for UK A-level, you do just use the calculator for everything, except questions involving unknown mean or standard deviation, where you still need to z-standardise in order to find the number of sigmas from the mean it is.

I've seen it (in translation) in 4 European countries. Glad I have the English edition.
