EUโ€™s von der Leyen hails COP28 as 'beginning of post-fossil era'

EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen hailed on Wednesday (13 December) the deal struck at the COP28 climate summit as the dawn of a new world with no need for coal or oil.

The final text, agreed on Wednesday morning (13 December), calls on UNFCCC parties to triple renewable energy capacity globally and double the annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030.

โ€œTodayโ€™s agreement marks the beginning of the post-fossil era,โ€ the president of the European Commission said in a social media post.

It also calls on countries to โ€œTransitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systemsโ€ by 2050 in accordance with the science.

โ€œA crucial part of this historic deal is truly made in Europe,โ€ von der Leyen rejoiced. โ€œThe whole world endorsed our 2030 targets: to triple renewable energy and to double energy efficiency, both by 2030.โ€

EU climate chief Wopke Hoekstra also spoke of a historic decision, saying it will set in motion an โ€œirreversibleโ€ transition away from fossil fuels.

โ€œWith that, we have achieved what we set out to do: keep 1.5 within reach and mark the beginning of the end of fossil fuels,โ€ he said on social media platform X.

The EU is not fighting fossil fuels, only emissions, Von der Leyen says ahead of G20

Her comments to reporters in South Africa may impact global climate talks wrapping up in Brazil

The EU isnโ€™t fighting fossil fuels themselves, but the emissions they produce that fuel climate change, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference in South Africa ahead of the G20 leadersโ€™ meeting on Friday.

The distinction is likely to send shock waves all the way to Brazil, where the United Nationsโ€™ climate change conference, COP30, is about to wrap up.

In Brazil, negotiators are discussing whether to establish a roadmap to meet the pledge countries made two years ago to transition away from fossil fuels. That decision was seen as a major achievement for the European Unionโ€™s international climate diplomacy.

Any perceived weakening of Brusselsโ€™ position on fossil fuels could undermine the chances of ensuring bold global commitments to end their use. A draft COP30 deal, published Friday, dropped the proposal, mentioned in a previous draft, to convene a conference to help world governments set up roadmaps to end their dependence on fossil fuels.

what a difference two years makes... #COP28 > #COP30

we absolutely must end fossil fuels โ€“ for the climate, for nature, for human rights, for our air and water, for our energy bills

The figure is divided into three panels. The right one shows the map of the study area in Northern Norway. Eight basins were sampled in the Vestjord region; samples are indicated by symbols. The circles indicate the samples from the shallow-silled basins; the squares indicate the deep-silled basins. The specific basins are indicated by color: include Tysfjord Deep (gray squares), Tysfjord Middle (orange squares), Tysfjord Inner (dark green circles), Sรธrfolda (magenta squares), Mistfjord (light green circles), Saltfjord (red squares), Skjerstadfjord (cyan circles), and Nordfjord (blue circles). There were significant differences between deep-silled and shallow-silled basins in species community structure indicated by ordination diagram (non-metric multidimensional scaling) on the top right panel. Further, points on the ordination diagram are clustered together by basin color, indicating basin-specific communities. The bottom right panel summarises the results of the study in a proposed scheme of community assembly from a hypothetical pool of species. It highlights the role of dispersal mediated by sill depth and Atlantic Water inflow, low between-fjord connectivity, and possible role of stochastic factors, such as priority effects.

This study examines macrobenthic communities in eight deep sub-Arctic fjord basins of northern Norway, using taxonomic and biological trait data to characterize basin-specific ecological patterns and assess processes underlying community assembly.

As a primatologist, Jane Goodall was a huge inspiration to me. I admired the way she describes chimpanzee behavior with such detail and empathy, and sheโ€™s inspired so many people and advocated for chimpanzee conservation and welfare.

However, I'm dismayed at what her narrative leaves out (1/10)
