Harmonielehre to die for - Rattle and Berlin Phil on the John Adams classic

”It was Adams’s 40-minute symphony-but-name that blew the roof off at Philharmone. In fact, the crowd went wild already after the first movement.”

Looking back at last week’s formidable concert with Kirill Gerstein and Gewandhausorchester under David Robertson, primed by Stravinsky and Ravel double-bill, combined with two contrasting works from 1960, Pärt’s Nekrolog and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from ”West Side Story”.

I can imagine! I just re-watched the Met video the other day. I put it on just to check one or two things in the first act opening, but I couldn’t press stop and enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish.

That is so true! And yes, it IS the top symphony of our time. The nice thing about growing older is to get to see things becoming classics. Harmonielehre was premiered on my 12th birthday, and it is indeed one of the (few) symphony-scale pieces that have really made it to the repertoire.
