Seeing Kamala Harris openly say that the system is broken was so powerful.

Just having someone in her position say it so candidly without qualification was beyond powerful.

I mean, there's some traditional African music that doesn't really adhere to the concept of a "downbeat" in the same way we westerners think of it. But that has little to do with Rollout, or the ongoing debate you've stirred with your question.

what the preview here doesn't say is that most of the $400,000 covered the costs of the concert. This wasn't profit

one of the reasons I had to stop working for an orchestra is the things we were constantly asked to do more or less in the *hopes* of future donations from ultra-wealthy

Also why hire a conductor at all if you can just get rich assholes to pay you money to pretend to be a conductor? Let's allow that in the violin section as well!

Letting an amateur conduct Mahler for money isn't the same thing at all. I get where you're coming from, and if I squint real hard I can see this as a sort of fundraising strategy, but it's just straight up disrespectful to the professionals that make the music and to the music itself

The harm is to the reputation of the institution, both the orchestra itself and the entire concept of an orchestra. What else can they trivialize for the right price? Not to mention the harm to the music itself, or the musicians, or the audience...
