The NSW Police Force has a culture of bullying, homophobia and sexism. One in three female officers report they have been sexually harassed at work. Employees who report sexual assaults and misconduct have been demoted or ostracised. A review into the toxic culture of the police force was continually delayed, and key victims were not contacted. Studies from the 90s indicate 40% of police families experience domestic violence. A culture of “protecting mates” means officers who commit domestic violence are significantly less likely to be charged and convicted than the general public. The ABC has noted “victims frequently reporting they've been discouraged from raising allegations or that their safety has been put at risk when they have sought help from police.” Despite these barriers, in 2024, 57 serving NSW police officers had been charged with domestic violence, and three had been convicted. Are these the people you want to work with? Policing is less dangerous than industries like agriculture or forestry, but injuries are common. Psychological injuries like post-traumatic stress disorder account for 74% of compensation costs, with the Auditor-General finding the police force was not “efficiently or effectively preventing future psychological injuries”. Police aren’t trained mental health professionals, but they act as first responders for people suffering mental health episodes. This often leads to police killing people who need help. Despite a NSW Upper House inquiry, and an internal police review recommending change, police still attend these calls and kill vulnerable people.
