1. america has a horrific, brutal facist and authoritarian tradition which has prepared for this moment;
2. that is not the only american tradition, and pretending it is helps the fascists.

Another source at NIH agreed and told me they were "all for a shutdown." That's in spite of the fact that their life would be substantially altered as a result. "A shut down would be very disruptive to my personal work and personal finances but we are so far beyond what is permissible in a functioning society and government," they said.

As a shutdown approaches and Dem leadership does its usual schtick, just re-upping that basically every fed employee I've heard from in recent weeks (anecdotal, yes, but still!) is pro-fight, pro-shutdown-if-necessary. As I wrote a couple weeks ago about NIH:
