Can’t afford a goose in this economy?
Never mind. You can make ‘A Goose with One Leg’.
Instead of a goose, simply stuff a leg of mutton with a kidney stuffing (yum!) and PRETEND it’s a goose. I’m assured it will have ‘the delicate flavour of poultry, but costs less’. (AWW, 12 December 1942)
A loaf made of jelly, eggs and gherkins surrounded by salad.
Stuck on a recipe for your next Christmas do?
Try this Jellied Veal Loaf from 1939. Apparently, it’s ’a delicious luncheon dish and ideal for occasions over the holiday season when you want to serve something a little different’ (AWW, 23 December 1939)
Go on…try it. I dare you.
Delighted that @michellearrow.bsky.social chose my book ‘A Matter of Taste’ for @theconversation.com’s Best Books of 2024. What an honour!
