when checking out a new songwriter or artist, i like to start with live versions. a good one is Jessica Pratt and her band doing Life Is on the late show. the clear vocal harmonies, driving drums, robotic guitar. there’s a moment where it (my perception) goes minor and snaps back (which is sick).

I’ve been calling them bleats

childhood: a friend’s parents playing dune on laserdisc. nightmarish. i recall it feeling like the characters where sinister chess pieces come to life, which i guess is a pretty accurate read of dune.

a few years earlier: twin peaks ceremonial viewings at friends’ apartments. ordering a black coffee in a diner at night felt like the most enlightened thing a person could ever do.

david lynch memories. i remember seeing inland empire and the sets seemed to spill out into the dimly lit hallways after leaving the theater. i don’t think i’ve been so unsettled and transported by a movie.
