5 years on, COVID remains NZ’s most important infectious disease – it still demands a strong response Hospitalisations and deaths attributed to COVID have dropped significantly since a peak in 2022. But a new variant could still reverse the trend quickly.

YouTube video by Roche Introducing Roche Sequencing by Expansion (SBX) Technology

Catching up on recent news in the genomics world by watching Roche's SBX technology intro, it's pretty trippy seeing the 13 yr old video from Stratos Genomics which is almost word for word identical for the first 60 seconds...! youtu.be/G8ECt04qPos vs youtu.be/ADzIXItP4hE

The Internet Archive has tools that let you manually preserve a web page snapshot, and check to see if older versions are backed up, just in case that’s relevant today for some reason. web.archive.org

Scientists to Govt: Put your money where your mouth is

Cabinet wants more productivity out of the science sector, but isn't willing to boost funding to match the output of target countries.

A laptop lid covered in stickers of birds and butterflies, plus a grumpy rock, the meme dog "This is fine" surrounded by fire, and a cat wrapped in a blanket with the caption "Okay that's enough "today" for me. I'll just be a burrito over here thanks."

Here's a progression of the sunrise from pre-dawn through sunup.
I walked the beach for 75 minutes this morning, feet in the water, watching the dark sky slowly move through these colour shifts and into sunrise.
Papatūānuku. This is a special place.

Great thread on pertussis.
TLDR - make sure you're vaccinated, make sure your kids are vaccinated against this horrible disease

21.01.2025 06:20 β€” πŸ‘ 26    πŸ” 11    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You should not expect to get pertussis and have everything be okay just because you get a 5-day course of azithromycin. Preventing pertussis disease is by far the best approach and there is nothing right now that works as well for that as being up to date on vaccines.

21.01.2025 06:05 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Pertussis is awful even if you’re not at high risk, but it literally kills and disables babies. The vaccines are not perfect, but keeping up to date and getting boosted in pregnancy is critical.

21.01.2025 05:55 β€” πŸ‘ 195    πŸ” 57    πŸ’¬ 4    πŸ“Œ 4

Your vaccination also protects the lives of babies under 1 who cannot be fully immunized. 10% of adults in NZ’s outbreak vs 2/3 of babies have had to be hospitalized.

Pertussis can make small children stop breathing and even a β€œmild” case in an adult can mean months of coughing so severe ribs break

Neil Gaiman and the political economy of rape - Overland literary journal The interactions between Gaiman, Palmer, Pavlovich, and the couple’s young child are all outlined in Shapiro’s article. There is, though, another figure in the narrative whom the article does not name...

"Auckland is not just the place where these things happen to have occurred: this is _a story about Auckland_."

We interrupt our summer break to bring you this important piece by Emmy Rakete on Neil Gaiman and the political economy of rape.
