To be fair, the protag in Disco Elysium is such an absolute mess of a person, just a garbage pit of oh no, that I hardly think there'd be a difference in his design if he was female.

yeah usually it's less of an issue with animal protags (but still cowardice to choose a male and not a female)

that might even be an actual reason why i don't mind it in Kingdom Hearts but I do in games like Disco Elysium (Sora is unequivically not you, but the MC in DE is kind of not you)

The game usually needs to do a LOT of heavy lifting to justify having the character be specifically not you. Either that or make the character so overwhelmingly good in the design department that it doesn't matter. (Looking at animal protagonists)

Opinion of indeterminate temperature: I'm 99% more likely to bounce off a game if there's no option for a female protag, unless the character is not supposed to be you, and even then that doesn't really move the scales that much.
