You don't attempt to determine what did happen. Accusations pile in from all sides - respected journalists among them - of false balance. It's right that you report the US administration's statements, and those from the mayor of Minneapolis, but it's wrong that you leave it there. This is a question of fact, and there is plentiful video evidence from near the time. BBC Verify has shown its ability to do these jobs - I've been watching their debunkings of posts about Venezuela over the last couple of days - and there's video available from at least 18:00 yesterday which would take very little time to analyse. BBC Verify has not produced an analysis, however, presumably because they haven't been asked to. Do they never act on their own initiative? I quote a Bluesky post from Robert Saunders of the Mile End Institute at Queen Mary University of London: "I understand the pressures on the BBC, but Radio 4's coverage of the Minneapolis shooting is an example of 'bad balance'. It's all 'the Trump regime says she was a terrorist, but Democrats say it was murder'. The BBC has the footage. It doesn't have to treat truth and falsehood as equally valid." Ed Wilson
