Indeed the Union *is* the member states.

The EU itself is neither good nor bad, it is whatever the people of Europe choose it to be within the confines of its democratic structure.

It's clear that structure isn't working. But it's also clear that the EU is the only way give Europeans sovereignty.

I don't think the European political class has fully grasped how much credibility the EU has lost with pro-Europeans over the past year.

The constant gaslighting by our leaders on the subjects of Trump and Israel are making it very difficult for people like myself to keep defending the union.

Europe's surrender summer Those defending the EU's "trade deal" with Trump are missing the forest for the trees. Whether or not the EU can actually make the payments promised, von der Leyen has cemented subservience.

First came the UK's surrender deal in May.

Then came NATO's "daddy" grovelling in June.

Now we have the EU's consent to vassalage in July.

I shudder to think what's next in August.

My take on the decades of sovereignty progress erased in just 6 months:

Behind the crowing, this is not a proud day for Europe NATO's Rutte today called Trump a "daddy" who had rightly scolded this naughty continent into spending more money on US military equipment. The European Trump response reaches new pathetic depths.

Perhaps the most enraging thing about Europe's Surrender Summer is that each time our leaders have sold their citizens down the river to appease their American masters, they've then turned around and gaslit us saying it's a great thing for Europe.

In fact it seems to me that the people resolutely defending von der Leyen right now and deluding themselves into thinking the EU is playing chess while Trump is playing checkers are remainers in the UK.

The EU does bad things sometimes. This is one of those times.

I suggest you look into this a bit more. Not everything is black and white, two things can be true. The EU has both surrendered *and* this is not the trade deal that the Trump administration is pretending it is.

There is a reason that the Brussels bubble is aghast at this.

What was agreed wasn't a deal, it was a unilateral surrender. The EU agreed to accept the 15% tariffs and not object to them at the WTO, and they agreed to extortionate demand to pay billions in energy and weapons.

A few minutes ago von der Leyen's trade nuncio Maroš Šefčovič said one of the quiet parts out loud when it comes to Europe's capitulation to Trump. "It's about Ukraine."

I've seen a lot of cope from people saying the EU is playing chess while Trump is playing checkers because tariffs will hurt the importer's consumers more than the exporter's.

But the issue is that the EU has just legitimised illegal tariffs.
