Cannot recommend this book highly enough: it takes history education seriously and is a history of ideas about it - itβs also a powerful philosophical enquiry.

In 1890, Expresses left Halifax at 1.30pm and arrived at LΓ©vis at 10.40am the following day - about 20hrs of travel time. But how often was it on time? LAC has govt railway logs for the period, so I suppose average performance could be (maybe has been) calculated.

βWhen democracy deteriorates, you need more and better civic education. If there is a pandemic, you need to send in the nurses and the doctors. Itβs the same thing with a democracy crisis β civic educators are the nurses.β

These Ottawa churches opposed heritage status, the city is pushing forward anyway
The city is in a rush to give historic buildings heritage status, but several Catholic churches are against the move. Here's why.
Heritage designations are very often contentious. There's a tension between preserving our history and the additional resources that sometimes requires, and cities lack tools to enforce heritage protections. The City could be less parsimonious with help; we need legal teeth from the Province.

Ken Dryden truly cared about what went on around him and wanted to make the world better.
Wrote him a letter as a kid. He wrote back, thoughtfully. That stuck with me.
Met him as an adult in 2011. Told him about the letter. Had a casual chat about cheeseburgers of all things.
A great Canadian.

Great thread. AI planned lessons I've seen are at best very superficial and at worst just plain poor. When teachers deliver lessons without doing the thinking themselves, or understanding the thinking of the person who planned, or without adapting, learning and student thinking are the casualties.
