Old things have to pass away for new things to come into being. We let go to move on and grow. It's okay to let things die. Endings are the soil the beginnings grow in.

It’s a microcosm for the cape shit medium in general. This is not to say there is not good work being done in that medium. There absolutely is, but we judge as a whole, not in parts.

Spawn is still a very 90's comic book character that has never transitioned through postmodernity, deconstruction, to the current nihilist zeitgeist. It creates a very out-of-place character. 90's grunge grimdark is a moment that has passed.

Without a destination, there can never truly be a resolution, so the characters pass from being a character to being an archetype. But all these archetypes are stunted by the time period they were originally designed for. This really only works for a very small number of characters.

Unfortunately, I feel Spawn suffers from an old mindset of comics where a character is supposed to go on indefinitely. I feel in some way this is what Moore means when he talks about comics being for young boys. A huge chunk of the medium is not allowed to ever have growth.

I maintain that “Spawn,” if read from #1 to #100, is actually good. I can't imagine, though, reading that as a monthly and can understand why people found it plodding. Although I think that pace really nails home Al as a character. There is a real character arc there.

It just occurred to me you could easily do a gender-bent X-Files. For one, Fox Mulder is already extremely twink-coded (we also know what David Duchovny looks like in drag. Thank you David Lynch). Hell, you would not even need to change the name; Fox is not exactly gendered.
