despite my misgivings on these "value engine" type creatures, i will respect them for at least doing several things right. i just hope we can see cards like murktide regent and tarmogoyf see play again in the near future. that ban announcement cannot come soon enough.

Modern's sweetheart, Tarmogoyf. 1G for a */1+* lhurgoyf (?????) which has power equal to the number of card types in all graveyards, and toughness equal to that number plus 1. Simple, effective, threatening, perfect.

murktide regent is a threat that requries some real build-around, especially so in the old izzet builds where you had to cast the guy while maintaining delirium. but when he lands, he's just gonna hit hard and be a little evasive. it's like a modern take on tarmogoyf. it's masterful.

Murktide Regent. 5UU for a 3/3 dragon with flying, but it has Delve, so you can exile cards from your graveyard to reduce its cost as low as UU. For each instant and sorcery exiled via delving it, Murktide Regent comes in with a +1/+1 counter, often making it a 2 mana 8/8 with flying. As an added bonus, whenever an instant or sorcery leaves your graveyard you put another +1/+1 counter on the guy.

surprise, this is a thread that lets me talk about why murktide regent is my favorite Modern Horizons card. a lot of my beef with the frog and the eye is that they're both this but way more overtuned. murktide is powerful, extremely so--but it's just a beater. 2 mana 8/8 flier. that's all you need.

Unearth. B for a sorcery that returns target creature card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. You can also cycle it for 2. I don't wanna think about how desperate you'd have to be to cycle it for 2.

the fact that these both see play in the same deck makes sense, and it's interesting seeing Unearth be so good all of a sudden, but man. all this together makes for a truly miserable experience on the receiving end. unearthing an oculus as early as turn 2 makes me feel like i'm putting down a dog.

Abhorrent Oculus. 2U for a 5/5 Eye (????) with flying, BUT as an additional cost to cast it you have to exile 6 cards from your graveyard. At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep you manifest dread, which has you look at the top 2 cards of your library, put one in the graveyard and one on the battlefield as a face down 2/2 creature. If the mystery card IS a creature you can flip it for its mana cost whenever.

i really don't like this thing. but it IS a card from a new standard set seeing play, which is nice, and the standard deck built around it is cool. it's also surreal playing around manifested cards in MODERN. i just hate the play patterns on this guy. please make him four mana. or something.

Psychic Frog. UB for a 1/2 frog. When it deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, draw a card. You can then funnel those cards directly into its activated ability, letting you discard a card to put a +1/+1 counter on it. Finally, once you're done dumping the bad cards out of your hand, you can get them out of your graveyard too with the last ability: by exiling 3 cards from your graveyard you can give Psychic Frog flying, too.

froggy here is a VERY difficult card to play optimally. you don't really realize it until you sit down and play with it. there's a lot more going on under the hood here and it's pretty intense. it's a card that rewards good players with forethought. few designs are both this good and this intricate.

to be honest, i like neither psychic frog nor abhorrent oculus but both have admirable attributes. both of them have the same root issue for me: being value engines that command and end the game completely on their own, and not in a way that's particularly fun either. however...
