It has been the honor of my life to serve as Commissioner of BLS alongside the many dedicated civil servants tasked with measuring a vast and dynamic economy. It is vital and important work and I thank them for their service to this nation.

Big news in today's #jobs report are the revisions. The labor market is much weaker than originally reported the last two months. While payrolls grew 73k in July, May and June data were revised down a total of 258k to 19k and 14k, respectively, bringing 3-month average growth down to 35k.

In short, fewer people are being laid off, but once they are it's harder to find work. That echoes the June JOLTS data which shows new hires in the economy down by 261,000 in the month of June, even as separations have slowed. www.bls.gov/news.release...

New jobless claims dipped below their plateau of 240,000 per week that persisted in the first half of June, falling to 236,000 (S.A.) in the week ending June 21 (down 10,000). Economic pain is certainly worse-latest figures show that fewer than 3 in 10 jobless workers are currently collecting UI.

What’s more concerning, the total number of individuals insured by state UI programs is approaching 2 million, a level not reached since November 2021. For the week ending June 7, there are 1.945 million workers on state UI rolls, down just 6,000 from the week prior.

As immigration, trade, and budget policy rattle our economic equilibrium, it is not hard to imagine more policy-driven layoffs. Sounder economic policy is badly needed.
