i think this is a big reason why the steam deck works, valve managed to make linux Just Work. some things don't work, but most things do, and it feels good to use. but that's like, the exception that proves the rule

i could have linux and worry whether or not most games i want to play will be compatible with proton or wine or whatever translation layer will work, or i can use windows and it just works.

this doesn't even get into shit like drivers, or having to use a package manager, etc.

lrt: "the year of the linux desktop" will simply never happen, no matter what reddit tells you, simply because even though you /can/ do most windows things on linux, being able to is not, and will never be, a frictionless experience for the end user, and most people do not want friction in their os.
