Silhouettes of rifle-carrying soldiers wearing helmets observing the test are visible in the foreground.
An excerpt from Richard L. Miller's 1986 book, "Under the Cloud: The Decades of Nuclear Testing": "While Taylor was waiting, he managed to locate a concave, parabolic mirror. After determining the point at which the light would converge, he attached a small wire. The next day, June 1, 1952, he would conduct an experiment of his own. At 3:50 on June 1, the troops in the trenches were told to kneel and lean against the side of the trench nearest the tower. Five minutes later, Scorpion/GEORGE ignited with a force of 15 kilotons. At the Control Point, Ted Taylor aimed his parabolic mirror at the intensely bright, fissioning mass. At the end of the wire he had attached a Pall Mall. In a second or so the concentrated, focused light from the weapon ignited the tip of the cigarette. He had just made the world's first atomic cigarette lighter. The explosion had hurled a mushroom cloud 37,308 feet into the sky and into the path of a 41-mph south wind. Fallout quickly began to fall on the northern Nevada town of Elko. The nuclear cloud then passed over northern Nevada and curved east in a tight trajectory that took it across the northern plains states before fanning out over the East Coast. On June 5, at 5:30 P.M. local time, while children in Chicago might have been reading the very first issue of "Archie's Joke Book Magazine" or perhaps the more appropriate "Atom Age Combat" detailing "The Exploits of Buck Vinson in the War of Wars," parts of Scorpion/GEORGE were drifting 35,000 feet overhead. The highest fallout from GEORGE occurred in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, where several hundred thousand counts per minute were recorded for each square foot of land area. ..."
Today in 1952, Los Alamos theoretical physicist and nuclear weapons designer Ted Taylor used a parabolic mirror and a 15-kiloton nuclear explosion (Shot GEORGE) detonated atop a 300-foot tower in Nevada to light a Pall Mall cigarette. Taylor designed the lightweight “Scorpion” device for the test.
