How universities came to be — and why they are in trouble now What and who universities are for has changed considerably since the Second World War, leaving long-standing institutions ill-equipped to cope with current financial and political challenges.

'Worldwide, there are up to 1,000 research-intensive universities out of more than 23,000 institutions in total. But these are perceived to be ever more important for economic success — something that has brought its own challenges.' 1/2
