Here in New Jersey, we have a great example of how that's working in Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill. Whatever you think of her, or her campaign, she is tremendously qualified for whatever job she wants. But she still has to perform both femininity and masculinity in a way male candidates don't.

Sexism is still a problem in elections nationwide and in New Jersey. But it's less the gutter sexism of the past - though there's still some of that - than the more subtle sexism of how gendered expectations are applied to female candidates for high office.
