4) reread Heart of Darkness about the horrors of imperialism
5) worked on taxes—I want this money to fund national parks

As a historian, I keep thinking that these will be the days people look at when they try to figure out how everything went wrong.

The thing non teachers don’t understand is how little of the job is teaching. I spent most of the day counseling and consoling kids—listening to and crying with them. No one tells you have these students crawl into your heart.

Yesterday I talked with a former student who now works for the State Department—this is a brilliant young person who could have made a fortune but chose to serve his country. Expertise matters. Government employees matter.

Every day people in my net gather on the trails to watch the sunset. We may have little in common, but I love that we share a piece of magic.

I was teaching government today and a student asked if we should bother to learn all this stuff if it’s just going to be thrown out now. I had no answer for him.

I punched and kicked like a woman on fire in kickboxing class this morning. How are y’all coping?

I remember when I just worked all day. Now I have to find time to look up obscure 1974 laws on Impoundment Control, the history of Greenland, and the appropriate way to fire federal employees. It’s all exhausting.

I’ve got a case of Sunday anxiety, so I’m trying to channel the peace of sleepy kittens.

At kickboxing this morning I noticed my punches and kicks were extra hard. I wonder where this pent up fury is coming from?! Week 1.

Since I’m only shopping at Costco now, I need a bigger fridge!!

I say a lot of nerdy things, but in class yesterday I reached my peak geek when I announced, “I was listening to this podcast on early sewing machines”

So my government curriculum has gone out the window—we now spend half of each day just saying “what the hell happened today?”

Well, the world may be going to hell, but the government class I’m teaching sure is fun!

I am who I am because of the women who bring wine and snacks when the world gets to be too much.

I mostly hate Texas, but then it gives me this on my way to work and I can’t figure out how to quit it.

I was away for a few days for a family emergency, and it made me deeply grateful for home and the life I have built here.

It’s been a hard few days—we lost my mother-in-law. I should have absorbed a beautiful lesson, but in reality it’s just left me sad. We had nothing in common except that we both loved her son. And that was enough.

So much better than a treadmill run!
