Continent-wide assessment of the strain-level diversity of Bradyrhizobium, a dominant soil bacterial genus Global surveys of soil bacteria have identified several taxa that are nearly ubiquitous and often the most abundant members of soil bacterial communities. However, it remains unclear why these taxa ar...

New study out - we developed a pipeline for targeted assembly of genomes from (complex) soil metagenomes to examine the strain-level diversity and ecology of a dominant soil bacterial genus (Bradyrhizobium). Feedback appreciated. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

On this #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay, a reminder: science should be accessible to allβ€”πŸ§ͺ in the lab, 🀿 in the field, πŸ’» online. From reef data to dive gear, let’s build accessibility into every part of #CoralReefScience. Inclusion strengthens our scienceβ€”and our seas. 🌊🌍🀝

A reproductive and trophic analysis of corals in a degraded environment - Coral Reefs Understanding the persistence and resilience of corals in degraded environments can provide insight into the potential persistence of coral communities as coastline urbanization expands. We assessed t...

New paper alert❗️We looked at #coral reproduction and nutrition in a degraded shipping port. We found colonies in the Port to be more fertile than those in nearshore reefs and demonstrate the value of using amino acid isotope analysis to understand mixotrophic diets. #firstpublication #coralreefs

A little side project, taking some time to generate gene predictions & annotations for the chromosome level coral genomes generated by the @sangerinstitute.bsky.social. So far, they are looking good and RNA-seq reads are aligning beautifully πŸ€—πŸ€—. Some protein buscos with other avaliable coral genomes

Are there resources circulating about how to proceed if a #NSF grant is terminated?

Thought I saw stuff the other day… Posting on behalf of a colleague who had a #NSF grant axed yesterday.

Figure 3. Timetree of Cetacea analyzed in the MCMCTree package of PAML 4.9h using six partitions and approximate likelihood (Yang 2007). A time scale in Ma (millions of years) is shown above the tree, with geologic periods labeled below the tree for reference (Q = Quaternary). Above each node the posterior distributions of the AR model (purple) and IR model (white) are shown. Raw numbers for the mean and 95% confidence intervals for each node and each model are shown in Supplementary Table S3 available on Dryad. Red circles at each node represent calibration points listed in Table 2. Illustrations are by Carl Buell and represent (top to bottom) T. truncatus (common bottlenose dolphin), Sousa chinensis (Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin), F. attenuata (pygmy killer whale), O. orca (killer whale), Delphinapterus leucas (beluga), L. vexillifer (Yangtze river dolphin), Mesoplodon layardii (strap-toothed whale), Ziphius cavirostris (Cuvier’s beaked whale), P. macrocephalus (sperm whale), B. physalus (fin whale), B. mysticetus (bowhead whale), and B. taurus (domestic cow). This tree with posterior node estimates was generated with the mcmc.tree.plot function from the R package MCMCtreeR (Puttick 2019).

McGowen et al. (2019) sequenced 3191 protein-coding genes from 68 species of cetaceans. Their phylogeny shows narwhal is closest to beluga & beluga + narwhal are most closely related to Phocoenidae (porpoises) diverging from them in the neogene (~15 mya) #2025MMM doi.org/10.1093/sysb...
