As someone who loves legends and lore, as well as food culture, I honestly can't get enough of "Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods" by @authorgracelin.bsky.social . This book is a gift.

03.09.2025 13:45 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I think that is what makes story—and being human—so wonderful. We can always continue the story to the ending we want.
What stories you would want a new ending to?
For me, many of the Chinese legends ended w/heartbreak—and I didn’t like it! Many of my books are about giving a new ending to these stories. For example, the legend of a Bell where a trapped spirit of a girl begs for her shoe. In my book, the spirit finally gets her shoe…and is freed.

Paperback year of the dog cover with yellow decorative accents
When it was first published, it was thought putting an Asian face on the cover would turn off readers so I conceived of making it look like a Chinese red envelope with gold foil-was so happy about it! Over the years, the cover has lost its foil but gained an Asian face so I don’t feel any loss.

To my great surprise, “Year of the Dog” hit the USA Today’s bestseller list at 130 a couple weeks back. This was my very first novel, published back in 2006(?). While it did receive a starred review, it didn’t do much else. It has never made any bestseller list…until now, almost 20 years later.

Grace Lin's wonderful new book, The Gate, the Girl, and the Dragon features the lion cub from a Chinatown gate who must figure out how to fix things when the Sacred Sphere gets lost.

A lovely librarian gave this to me at ALA! Isn’t it amazing? I’m trying to decide if I should paint it or leave it grey. Regardless, it captures the book perfectly!😍
