ZMT total social media mentions for all research ever published are higher on Bluesky than Twitter in 2025

We are starting to see higher total cumulative annual mentions for entire organisations on Bluesky than on Twitter.

Below are mentions of all research ever published by @leibniz-zmt.de. Bluesky is higher than Twitter in 2025.

Why Is Oropouche Spreading so Fast? The Oropouche virus is spreading fast across the Americas, driven by climate change and deforestation — raising alarms over a new global arboviral threat.

9/🔍 Our findings demonstrate the importance of integrated approaches — combining genomic, epidemiological, and ecological data — to address emerging arboviruses.

8/⚠️ This study highlights OROV's potential to expand beyond the Amazon, driven by environmental change, human mobility, and vector adaptability.
Strengthening surveillance is essential to mitigate future risks.

Table with the results of the correlations

7/ 🌱🍫☕️🌶 Spatial analysis showed strong correlations between OROV incidence and agriculture.
Municipalities with extensive cocoa, coffee, and pepper cultivation were particularly affected — likely due to vector breeding habitats.

Boxplots of Ct values from OROV reverse transcription PCR in patients with or without fever, headache, myalgia, and retroorbital pain. Black horizontal bars indicate medians, tops and bottoms of boxes indicate interquartile ranges, vertical whiskers indicate ranges. Gray dots represent individual Ct values. p values determined by 2-sided Mann–Whitney U test for each comparison

6/🌡️ Patients with fever, headache, and myalgia had significantly higher viral loads, indicated by lower Ct values in RT-qPCR assays.
This may suggest an association between viral replication and symptom severity.

Age-sex pyramid of the OROV incidence rate (per 100,000 inhabitants). Incidence rates are shown for each age group. Frequency of symptoms reported in OROV-positive patients.

5/🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️ Most cases were adult males, likely reflecting occupational exposure in rural areas.
Common symptoms: fever (91%), headache (81%), muscle pain (68%), and retro-orbital pain (33%).

Estimates of Rt during the OROV outbreak. Solid black curve represents the median Rt; shaded area indicates 95% credible interval, based on daily incidence data including local and imported cases. Dotted line indicates Rt = 1. Rt was estimated using sliding windows of τ = 7 days. CHIKV, chikungunya virus; DENV, dengue virus; OROV, Oropouche virus; Rt, instantaneous reproduction number.

4/ 📈 The outbreak showed rapid transmission: the time-varying reproduction number (Rt) peaked at ~3.0, similar to urban arboviruses, like Dengue and Zika.

Bayesian phylogenetic trees created from analysis of Oropouche virus segments associated with the reassortant lineage M1L2S2 in Espírito Santo, Brazil, and reference sequences. Each tree includes a representative subsample of genomes from the epidemic clade (highlighted); tip colors indicate sampling locations. Branch support values are shown for the main clades. Scale bars indicate the number of nucleotide substitutions per site. S, small; M, medium; L, long.

3/🔬We tested over 29,000 samples from patients with suspected arbovirus infections.
Molecular analyses identified OROV in 17 municipalities. Sequencing confirmed strains from the Amazonian reassortant lineage.

Spatial distribution of Oropouche virus cases and climate classification in Espírito Santo, Brazil. A) Espírito Santo, with municipalities colored according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification. Red dots indicate cases. Orange shading represents case density. Inset shows location of Espírito Santo state in Brazil.

2/🌳🌾 Espírito Santo, historically free from OROV, became a hotspot due to favorable environmental and agricultural conditions.
Most cases occurred in areas with intensive cocoa, robusta coffee, coconut, and pepper farming, ideal for Culicoides paraensis.

Temporal distribution of Oropouche virus in Espírito Santo, Brazil. A) Weekly percentages of CHIKV, DENV-1, DENV-2, and OROV infections for epidemiologic weeks 9–24, 2024.

🧵1/🧪🦟🦠 Our research group, in collaboration with partners, reports the emergence of Oropouche virus (OROV) in Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil.
In 2024, we confirmed 339 OROV cases between March and June — the first major outbreak in the Atlantic Forest biome.

Multiplex immunophenotyping of FFPE samples showing the presence of CD4+, CD8+, CD68+, IL-17A+
and IL-6+ cells in A) liver and B) lung samples (bars = 100µm).

This study underscores how metabolic conditions (e.g., obesity, hepatic steatosis) and dysregulated immune responses may exacerbate OROV infection. Our findings call for enhanced surveillance, rapid diagnostics, and deeper research on viral evolution and host vulnerability.

Maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on concatenated sequences of the three OROV genomic
segments (L, M, and S), illustrating the placement of the fatal case isolate within the Oropouche virus (OROV)
reassortment M1L2S2 lineage. Detection of Oropouche antigens on A) Liver, B) Lung and C) Kidney FFPE tissue sections by
immunohistochemistry (IHC) using anti-OROV IgG2a monoclonal antibody (bar = 50 µm). Three-times magnified
view of region of interest (ROI) showing presence of OROV antigens inside cells from D) Liver image, E) Lung and
F) Kidney.

Whole-genome sequencing identified a novel M1L2S2 reassortant Oropouche strain with mutations in the L segment. Viral antigens were abundant in the liver, lungs, and kidneys, correlating with intense tissue damage.

Key pathological findings reported on liver, lung and kidney tissue samples in a fatal case of OROV
infection. A) Macrovesicular steatosis with irregular distribution, predominantly affecting zones 2 and 3 of the hepatic
acinus, a four-pointed star marks hepatocyte de-trabeculation near necrotic areas (magnified insert), while a five-
pointed star highlights hepatocytes in normal cords (magnified insert) (bar = 200µm); B) Multiple necrotic foci of
varying sizes are accompanied by neutrophilic and mononuclear exudates near steatotic regions (bar = 20µm); C)
Hepatocyte necrosis and disintegration without inflammatory exudate (circle), with evidence of multinucleated cell
formation, indicative of cellular fusion (arrow), and frequent nuclear pseudoinclusions, often in binucleated
hepatocytes or fused cells (arrowhead) (bar = 20µm); D) Hepatocyte cytoplasmic changes with variable vacuolation,
with vacuoles resembling ground-glass inclusions observed alongside translucent vacuoles associated with steatosis
(asterisk, magnified insert) (bar = 20µm)

We report a case of fulminant multiorgan failure caused by Oropouche virus. High viremia, coagulation dysfunction, and acute respiratory and renal failure developed rapidly. Histology revealed severe hepatic steatosis, lung edema, and kidney necrosis.
