Here in the northeast we don’t check our boots for snakes very often but we do check our Chuck Taylors for vestigial Puritanism and Catholic guilt

And frankly, so many games have done parry SO PAINFULLY BORINGLY that I have now been trained by literally decades of games to avoid even trying the mechanic. Your parry-first game needs to overcome all those shitty parry implementations that came before you.

Subway-style map of the itinerary in The Hobbit. The main journey is show in three different lines: red (Hobbiton to Goblin Town); green (Goblin Town to the Elvenking's Halls); and blue (Elvenking's Halls to Erebor). There are multiple stops on these lines. There is a yellow line going back from Erebor to Hobbiton, making stops at Beorn's Hall, Rivendell, and the Troll's Lair. There is an orange line directly from the Iron Hills on the map's right side to Erebor, and a purple line from Gundabad directly to Erebor. The map's title reads: "Hobbit Transit Map" and there are directions for both There and Back Again listing the lines and transfer points. A key shows the names of each colored line:
Red: Western Lands Line
Green: Mountains and Forests Line
Blue: Barrel Line
Yellow: Gandalf Express
Orange: Iron Hills Business Line
Purple: Orc and Goblin Reserve Line

Text at the bottom right reads Surprised Eel Maps, 2025

I cannot explain why we’ve managed to reboot practically every sci-fi narrative ever made *except* Alien Nation

I honestly don't know how to work without version control... I think too many young devs think it's back ups

It's not just that, it is allowing you to try some crazy fucked up shit and when it doesn't work out go - roll it back... doing normal work, why isn't this working now? Roll it back...

deathloop is an incredible narrative shooter from a studio that people expected a completely different genre from, so imo people who were expecting another dishonored or prey have a negative experience and people like me who are ok with just loving it as a narrative shooter think it's incredible

That critical work is deeply impressive. Criticism is so much more than offering a prospective consumer advice or making a top ten list. It's about understand a work and its context. It's about wrestling with meaning and form.

Comic. PERSON 1 [pointing to blueprint of a spacecraft holding a capsule on one end that is shaking back and forth] To produce artificial gravity during the voyage, the crew capsule is kept in constant motion. PERSON 2 with ponytail: Wouldn’t it make more sense to spin it instead of shaking it, so the acceleration is steadier? PERSON 1: ...Listen. You, I, and the crew *all* wish we’d thought of that before launch.

Think of the number of great games that had troubled development histories. All of them?

Now consider how often executives cancel troubled games.

Smooth development comes only when you take no risks.

Greatness comes only when great risks are braved.

Do the math.

The games business is about games. If you’re in the games business, and somehow (as often happens) your company somehow is now focused on something else (AI, XR, β€œIP,” acquisitions, etc.) you’re in for a period of struggle. Everyone will wonder what’s wrong. But you know. It’s about games. Gameplay.

Everyone knows Deus Ex is one of the most important games ever, so I'll use its 25th anniversary to highlight another game: CyberMage: Darklight Awakening.

It's a 1995 immersive sim led by David Bradley (Wizardry V-VII), Warren Spector & Harvey Smith - a forgotten stepping stone towards Deus Ex!
