Paper in @beranews.bsky.social journal suggests discussion-based learning more effective in subjects like English, lecture-based learning in subjects like Maths. Data from China but still worth consideration in this under-researched area bera-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirec...

This poem, entitled 'Needles' is presented in the form of a Christmas tree. These words form the shape of the tree:

I
wrote
a poem
in the shape
of a Christmas
tree but then forgot
to water it and only a few

days
later
there

And these words are distributed around the base of my poem 'tree' as if they've fallen off it:

were
words
all
over
the carpet

Astrid Y7: β€œI think poetry matters because people can express the way they feel about something in a different form.”

Ada Y7: β€œPoetry matters because it’s a way of being heard.”

Elliot Y7: β€œPoetry is a meaningful piece of artwork.”

Lesson 1 on poetry in Y7 before any input from me:
What is poetry?
Leo Y7: β€œPoetry is a way to express thoughts to help people deeply think about someone’s problems.”
Why does poetry matter?
Leo Y7: β€œFor some people, poetry really helps with mental health because it calms them down.”
Powerful stuff!

Teaching Writing; Intentions Before Techniques Barbara Bleiman argues that focusing too much on form when teaching writing can be counter-productive.

My most recent blog on writing - and why everyone practising the same sentence structures, and then all being required to use them, may not be the best way of developing really great student writing. www.englishandmedia.co.uk/blog/teachin...

Thinking of giving Oracy and Oracy Education the attention it’s always deserved? One place to start might be to listen to the different voices in school, adults and children (similar to the UK Oracy Commission approach) to establish viewpoints, experiences, and knowledge.
