So disappointing.
Archaeology and history belong to us all, not just the wealthy.
Has it been studied? Conserved properly? Published?
Just depriving the rest of us of knowledge and understanding.

A medieval illustration of a hedgehog with grapes skewered on its spines

It was believed in medieval times that hedgehogs had spikes so they could roll over fruit to carry home to their children, which is not true but is a really cute idea

Ken Murphy is Tesco’s UK CEO and the highest paid supermarket boss.

He gets Β£9,930,000 a year, but is registered to pay tax in the Republic of Ireland.

Yet today he complains about his workers wages being too high.

I'm just so very tired of "a reasonable debate on immigration with firm but fair controls" always meaning performative cruelty and incredibly thinly veiled racism.

Non-working partners risk limbo with UK migration reforms, analysis finds Research comes as ministers signal rethink of policy that could carry big fiscal cost

The government's earned settlement proposals manage to be politically and morally bankrupt at the same time as being economically and fiscally counterproductive.

Quite remarkable really.

it's #SuperbOwl Sunday! Best day of the year. For your consideration, the Blakiston's fish owl. Largest owls in the world (six-foot wingspans, weigh close to a bald eagle), salmon eaters, live year-round in remote forests of northeast Asia. πŸ¦‰

There's no reason to accept this as normal, though. Much of Starmer and Labour's unpopularity is not misfortune but his own doing. Mandelson was a choice. Consistently pursuing policy positions designed to appeal to people who will not vote for you - and alienating core supporters - is a choice.

For the House of Commons to swiftly and directly gainsay the Prime Minister on an issue of β€˜National Security’ is actually quite a significant day in our recent constitutional history.

For MPs to insist that a parliamentary committee has priority over PM is a pretty big thing.

And a welcome thing.

I’m not sure β€˜our national security developed vetting technique can be beaten if a candidate is prepared to lie’ is an especially helpful line to push.

Shockingly (to no one who has been following local government finances), councils are not rife with waste and fraud ...

In Kent, Reform's DOGE "had not found any significant waste to cut"

Incredible scenes as we slide from January into February and realise that yet again it's Monday night (and it's 5pm) so it MUST be time for Episode 4 of 'How light is it in #Orkney at 5pm this week?'

We are NOT making this up.

Do I recommend the last two days? No.

Not because of bog and mud, Its been an incredibly wet month, so what do we expect?

Despite all being designated coast path, the fast roads with no pavements are simply too dangerous to walk safely. This part of the coastpath is not fit for purpose.

He was wrong. I’m married to a retired highly skilled and paid (= highly taxed), English as a first language, former NHS-employed immigrant. He came here to fill job shortages, not take any Brit’s job. He & others like him align with other immigrants & feel excluded & unwelcome in this country now.
