Growing up in Offaly and raising my kids in Dublin, I’ve only ever known them as pencil parers. Pencil sharpeners was something you might hear on the telly (that’s TV or television 😉). I’ve never, in my 50+ years, ever heard them called toppers.

I sat on a jury once as Jim O’Callaghan successfully defended three Gardaí who beat a man in the back of a Garda car so brutally they hosed him down before calling an ambulance. His real trick wasn’t to defend the Gardaí but to turn the jury on one another so there wouldn’t be a majority verdict.
