A big congratulations to my PhD student, Aishwarya Patel, for advancing to candidacy! She studies how host–microbiome mismatches shape health and phenotype using three deer mouse species across field and captive experiments. Excited to see where her work goes next! @aishwarya-patel.bsky.social

While in between jobs I built a web app using my PhD data to visualize gene ontology results and highlight shared WGCNA modules across tissues in the cactus mouse. A small step to keep my skills sharp while making complex data more intuitive and shareable

About 15-20 yrs ago, a bunch of reviews (inc. 1 by me) made predictions about the future of genomics in conservation. 1 yr ago at ICISB, Robin Waples assessed which of those predictions had been fulfilled. Sam May & Sam Rosenbaum now led the effort to turn this into a review:

Sifting though the job market as an #ECR right now is soul crushing. As far as I can tell there is nothing. I feel like my career will never start due to the decisions of others.

I was working on a coding puzzle in R but kept needing python logic and dictionaries. Does R really not have any hashable data structures?

Now I'm working as a Research Associate in the State fisheries genomics lab at Oregon States Hatfield Marine Science Center. I can't wait to dive into genomic management of Chinook Salmon!

The other two chapters explored the difference between a high fat and low fat diet. We found diet-specific differences in the rate of evaporative water loss. We also show impacts on immune function, circadian gene regulation and mitochondrial function.

Two chapters explored water deprivation using physiology then gene expression. We found strong evidence for dehydration anorexia. Eating can actually make mice more dehydrated.

I did my PhD at the University of New Hampshire I focused on the physiological and genomic adaptations of desert mice (Peromyscus eremicus) using modern respirometry and RNAseq methods. We tested everything from diet to water deprivation in the cactus mouse.

hallo new science social media!! I do the science stuff and things. I've worked on everything from sturgeon to desert mice and salmon too. I'm super excited to share that my entire dissertation is published and open access! I'm back in fish world now so stay tuned for the fish things!!
