Neuroscientist, in love with microglia (and cycling). Views are my own

20.07.2025 13:31 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Today at the @mrcdtpbiomed.bsky.social we wrapped up our annual programme of summer placements for undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. Some very cool experiments, from macrophages to exosomes to microglia and brain organoids! Increased #diversity in future PhDs is the hope!

10.06.2025 07:16 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0βPrioritizing inclusivity in research will broaden our understanding of AD/ADRD, leading to greater awareness, earlier and more accurate diagnosis, and ultimately to equitable treatments and interventions that benefit all communitiesβ I say BRAVO to this, refreshing to see this clarity&commitment
07.06.2025 06:36 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Very happy for having contributed to this amazing study led by Jonathan Bastos and Kia Movahedi. Super cool findings! @sotonbiosciences.bsky.social @cp-immunity.bsky.social @liambc.bsky.social

A good session at the confocal never gets old. Our lovely human microglia :D (apologies for my rather inept photographing with my phoneβ¦)
18.03.2025 13:31 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0We have a rich fossil heritage on the south coast, marine reptiles, dinosaurs, the first humans on these islands... And everything in between. Come and find out about it at our new exhibition, running from April 4th to June 1st.

Really troubling to see all this narrative translating into real life changes to ED&I in research. The hope was for the scientific system to be above all the crap, showing leadership and independence. As somebody who spends lots championing ED&I, this is frustrating & worrying for my US colleagues
19.02.2025 13:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Itβs so profound that one would like to think that itβs not viable at all and will have to be scaled back somehow. I couldnβt possibly think about how Universities would deal with something like thisβ¦
08.02.2025 09:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Massively negative impact on the US academic system. For context, a similar measure in the UK would drive all Universities to bankruptcy
08.02.2025 09:24 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Wrapping up 2024, itβs been a year full of cool stuff in the lab, my team has been awesome. However it also was one of the most challenging years ever, personally, with life throwing the kitchen sink at us, including very challenging last few weeks. Really hoping for 2025 to bring some joy!

Happy to have contributed to this important piece, led by Michael Heneka. Neuroinflammation continues to be a core mechanism in Alzheimerβs disease, and the reasons are listed in this nice review!

Important news for the #neuroimmunology field, as TREM2 agonists were a leading therapeutic approach for #Alzheimerβs. Eager to see the full results published in due course, as they will hopefully help us understand the mechanism

Iβm sure folks know of this but, in case you wanted to find your X contacts in Bluesky, this works really well (although Iβd advise to check the name matched contacts are actually the same person you followed to avoid surprises!)
