A little ray of sunshine (well #Hiemalora stellaris) from the #Ediacaran of Port Union, Newfoundland where we are enjoying an early spring #FossilFriday in the field collecting data for a geoconservation project for @discoverygeoparknl.bsky.social

This #FossilFriday, something a little different that my usual #Ediacaran posts. These impressively large, 350 million year old (#Carboniferous) salamander footprints were discovered near Deer Lake, western #Newfoundland, in 2015. (photo: Ken Tuach)

#Fossilfriday with a pair of incomplete Bailiella. Most importantly, one exhibits a bite wound, on its lower thorax.

Coastal view looking across a narrow inlet towards tilted cliffs of dark, thickly-bedded sedimentary rocks. Waves break along the lower margin, contrasting with the dark blue waters of the sea. Seaweeds colonize the lower reaches of the cliffs imparting a coppery hue. In the upper left distance are rubbly cliffs topped with a grassy barren hill. The pale blue sky above is remarkably clear. The rocks here form part of the Mistaken Point Formation of the Conception Group and at certain levels contain an astounding array of "soft-bodied" fossils representing the oldest large, architecturally complex organisms known. https://www.gov.nl.ca/ecc/natural-areas/wer/r-mpe/

volcanic ash loosened by winter freeze thaw. the ash casts the fossils recovering the ash is important as a potential archive record of the fossils (which remain in the field). once cleaned and conserved they will go to the provincial museum

Happy #FossilFriday, we had a lovely day yesterday at our #Ediacaran fossil site at Inner Meadow yesterday collecting some morphometric data and recovering ash loosened by the winter. We had to remove some of the ice, both of which preserve beautiful natural casts of fossils

Another #FossilFriday and another Charnia paper out in the wild from Mun Paleobiology. This is a rare Mcilroy sole author paper mostly i publish with my students, but this was a solo adventure.
The paper shows how #Charnia masoni was constructed in 3D. Sculpting took about 100 man hours. …

A #trilobite species rarely seen intact, for #fossilfriday. #newfoundfossils

from latinization of the Beothuk word ewinon meaning feather. The Beothuk were the inhabitants of Newfoundland at the time of European colonization. A very few words were recorded from captive Beothuk prior to their cultural extinction.

This was the most fun thing i have done in my 30 years as a palaeontologist.

I think it is straightforward to follow it builds on the architectural concepts of brasier et al 2012.
