My partner is exactly the type of 🇵🇷 that #BadBunny is talking about: who lost everything during hurricane Maria + left the island to start over in mainland US to pursue his dreams. It's SO difficult esp with the Latino hate + ICE raids targeting + kidnapping/harming any Latino folks off the streets.

And we live in a majority Black/Brown neighborhood with mostly families and kids. We worry for our neighbors, the families, the kids.

We take precautions to protect our house + when we (rarely now) go out. Every time I go on a walk, I bring a whistle. My partner carries around his passport AND ID when he leaves the house. I accompany him whenever possible just in case. We get groceries and other things delivered to reduce risk.

Every day, I'm terrified that my Latino partner (us citizen) will be snatched and disappeared, injured, or killed. That my neighbors will be taken. There's an ice detention center near us in Tacoma, WA and ice has been in our area for months now, but they've been escalating since January.

Disabled son of ICE detainee dies after 30 days of hospitalization It had been months since Wael Tarabishi seen his father. The family is calling on ICE to release Maher Tarabishi so he may attend his son's funeral.

In October, ICE grabbed Maher Tarabishi.

He was a 24/7 caregiver for his disabled son Wael.

At the time of Maher’s detention, disability advocates warned that taking away Wael’s caregiver put his life at risk.

Wael died on Friday at age 30.

ICE caused his death.

They didn’t get to say goodbye.

Text: “A friend said those of us who live in Minneapolis should write about what's going on here for folks who live elsewhere. You need to know that whether you're a Republican, Independent or Democrat, the Constitution is being violated by our federal government. This is not about catching criminals, or even deporting people. It is about punishing an entire state, including citizens, for not supporting the president. Everyone in my part of Minneapolis is affected. On our streets, ICE is stopping people of color and demanding their papers. In America. US citizens do not have to prove citizenship to ICE. Yet people are being intimidated, some cases beaten up and detained, for requiring ICE to follow the law. ICE needs a judicial warrant to enter homes. Yet there are documented cases of them ignoring the law - violating a bedrock constitutional principle. Americans of color are staying home, afraid to go to work, school, to grocery shop, or fill their cars with gas. This isn't just "illegals" or immigrants with valid work permits, it is citizens who have had their cars rammed by ICE for merely looking Hispanic. Businesses are closing. Schools are 50 percent full. When they are open, fascists are calling in bomb threats because the president decided to make us a meme. After a daycare teacher with a valid work permit (through 2030) was snatched from her workplace, parents (and grandparents) have had to organize to watch their SCHOOLS, to make sure conditional rights are observed. This is being repeated throughout Minnesota. Imagine trying to do your job or live you life while also taking volunteer shifts to make sure the federal government doesn't act extrajudicially. Washington State SEEMS like it would be a safe state, but there's a massive ICE detention center in Tacoma, they've been doing raids here the past 6 months, and there's been reports of ICE going door to door in Tacoma this past Sunday. Oh + the Pierce Country sheriff is a racist + an ICE supporter.

My partner yesterday after seeing the Target kid taken by ICE: "Is this what the early days of the holocaust felt like when Jewish folks were hiding in homes from the Nazis?"

So many Latine folks are literally hiding in their houses now because of ICE regardless of whether they are citizens or not. I can't even explain to you how it feels right now if you aren't or don't live with someone Latino/Latina. NO ONE should be treated like this (even undocumented folks).

The kid had his American passport, but ICE refused to look at it. My Latino partner also carries around his American passport + driver's license everywhere, even on neighborhood walks. But that isn't enough when ICE racially profiles anyone Latino + refuses to look at identification.
