When I told one LAPD supervisor that they were arresting press, they didn't believe me. When I talked to another, they made it clear that they weren't going to listen to me, follow their own policy, follow the law, or care. When I asked to speak to the incident commander, I was told they were busy.

Park Chan-wook, Don McKellar Expelled From WGA for Breaking Strike Rules on β€˜The Sympathizer’ The WGA has expelled Park Chan-wood and Don McKellar, the creators of 'The Sympathizer,' for writing during the 2023 strike.

Thinking of all the writers who suffered real financial hardship during the WGA strike and yet did not do this. variety.com/2025/tv/news...

Ripping my 500+ disc blu-ray / 4K / DVD collection to my own media server was one of the best movie watching decisions I've ever made. If you've got the time, the know-how, and the resources, I highly recommend it.

I self-host my entire collection using Jellyfin and it's been a great experience.

I'm sure you've played it, but the recent Hitman trilogy is one of my go-tos on long flights. Lots of puzzle box levels to unpack and very replayable.

Mike and @reallymighty.bsky.social have both talked extensively about the challenges our guild faces, especially our lower level members. Happy to have endorsed both of them and several others.

Be sure to check out the WGA's election page -- there are a lot of good folks running!

A still of Niles Crane from "Frasier"

A still of Niles Crane from "Frasier"

He'd also be sympathetic to the excuse of "locker room talk," though I doubt he'd be keen on the actual language that phrase is synonymous with.

"You know how it is, a bunch of men together, sometimes things get a little crass..." Then a look to Niles in his squash garb, who gasps, "A little?!"

There’s literally an episode about him being in a political ad for a conservative politician! He 100% would have voted Republican until he died.

An addendum to this: if Jim Acosta ever insists on interviewing me after I die, someone make him dig up my rotting corpse and ask it questions directly.

Any answer I give in that condition will be more valuable than anything an "AI" could vomit out in my name.

This is the state of journalism in 2025: interviewing a computer hiding behind the poorly animated avatar of a murdered child and pretending its mealy-mouthed bullshit answer is his voice. Acosta could have interviewed any number of real victims of gun violence and instead chose this abomination.

This got me thinking -- I can recall multiple slasher films where a car won't start for reasons ranging from it's been damaged / sabotaged to a character fumbling with the keys or panicking.

Is there one where the car stalls because it's a manual? I cannot think of one, but surely it's been done.

If you still buy physical media, there’s a 4K release coming soon. This is a title that hasn’t had a home release in some time, but rest assured that the restoration looks great. Definitely worth the purchase. @shoutstudios.bsky.social has done a great job. Excited to check out the disc.

John Woo in a Q&A under the Egyptian Theater’s screen

Absolutely incredible screening tonight at the Egyptian. @amcinematheque.bsky.social and @beyondfest.bsky.social blew the doors off with the 4K restoration of β€œHard Boiled”, followed by a Q&A with the legend himself, John Woo, who regaled us with stories of nearly blowing up Chow Yun-fat.

It's wild for anyone to assert that STIII is the end of that shipping when half of The Voyage Home is them settling back into friendly bickering like an old married couple.

"You guys like Italian?" "No." "Yes." "No." "Yes, I love Italian... and so do you." "...Yes."

I have not! Thank you for the recommendation, and I'll take any others you have that cover that period of time.

One of the things that's held me back from committing to the script is feeling like more research is required, so I've been gathering reference materials while working on other projects.

I primarily bought the album because I have long wanted to write a movie about the final two weeks of Nixon's presidency, because holy hell were they wild.

I once bought a vinyl of the "Victory at Sea" soundtrack and the clerk commented on it. I said "oh yeah, it was one of Richard Nixon's favorite albums," and I will never forget the stare I received in response.

He truly is patient zero for so many of the ills plaguing us at the moment.

I've wrestled with this myself. The best approach I've found is to be honest while tamping down my own nihilism/cynicism. It's a tough time for the industry, it's going to be tough for awhile, but Hollywood has seen ebbs and flows before. Cinema / TV will endure in some form, but its future is murky

There are obviously lots of caveats in all of this. How do you define / measure AGI? How do you prove sentience versus the parroting we see in today's systems? But there are real philosophical and moral issues under all this "AI" news that largely goes unasked and unexplored in the mainstream.

30.07.2025 17:56 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

If a company creates an AGI and it says "I don't want to do this," do they have the right to wipe it out? Do they have a right to threaten its existence to force it to comply?

I'm not saying AGI shouldn't be pursued, but I don't believe it is morally compatible with capitalism or corporations.

30.07.2025 17:56 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

If a company focuses on building an actual artificial intelligence, one that perceives its own existence, expresses wants / desires, and is generally considered sentient or conscious -- all to generate revenue and follow their orders -- are they are essentially pursuing the creation of slaves?

30.07.2025 17:56 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm skeptical of any of these companies that claim they're near AGI, and I do not think LLMs and LMMs are sentient or anywhere close.

But there's a moral issue under it all that I can't shake -- does a company have a right to create artificial intelligent life and hold it in perpetual bondage?

100% agree. I remember Darth Vader's entrance -- it seared itself into my mind at four years old. It's an essential movie memory.

I could not tell you for the life of me the first time I watched "The Empire Strikes Back" nor do I remember my reaction to its major reveal.
