This is how horror movies start…

Are we ever seen in the same room?

Now I look back at it as a thing that happened. Back then I made it a lot worse than it needed to be for me.

But thank you, I really appreciate that.

Thanks. And I knew they weren’t in the majority. But that didn’t stop me going looking for them. It was weird. And it has kept my therapist busy!

I write because I honestly can’t imagine a world when I don’t. It’s what keeps me going. It’s who I am.

I think as creators that’s all we can do. As a full time writer, I write to survive, to earn a living, to keep a roof over my family’s head. And yes, knowing that people are out there loving what I’m doing is brilliant, but that’s not why I sit down every morning and start typing.

So that’s what I have to live for. For those moments when the writing takes over, when I’m lost in the worlds at my fingertips and so grateful that I can support the ones I love by doing what I love.

It’s when I feel most alive.

I write because in the moment, when it’s working, when I’m making things up and solving problems and creating something with an amazing team, that’s… that’s transcendental. The best feeling in the world, second only to the love I feel for my family.

It can’t be why I write.

And those moments when someone tells you how much they love your work, those moments are golden. Pure joy. I am so grateful anytime anyone shares what my work has meant to me. It is humbling and brilliant and intoxicating. But that isn’t why I write.

But that’s what I decided to do. And what I love. I’m ridiculously fortunate to do what I do for a living and never take it for granted.

Why, I hear you ask, did someone with all this self doubt decide to become a writer for Pete’s sake? Good question. I ask it myself. A lot.

I know a lot of this is wrapped up in the imposter syndrome I’ve talked about before. It’s something I’ve always struggled with. Seeing negativity online just reinforces the little goblin in my head. ‘SEE, I TOLD YOU YOU WERE CRAP! HERE’S THE PROOF! HERE ARE THE RECEIPTS!’

(Of course, that led to at least one of them making videos about how I was trying to censor them before sending their followers after me, but I digress.)

It got so bad I blocked a lot of the YouTubers, not so much because of what they were saying, but because I needed to stop myself from watching, because in watching I ended up paralysing myself. I couldn’t work. I couldn’t write.

It was a nightmare when we launched The High Republic and got all kind of hate. I read it all. Listened to all the opinions. Watched all the videos. And then, I kept going back to see what they were saying next.

Good reviews. Bad reviews. Appalling reviews. I read ‘em all. And I obsess about them. A lot. Did I mention I overthink?
