I, and many others, are incredibly disturbed by the recent actions taken by our HHS director and the recent resignations at the CDC. The latest issue of my newsletter was supposed to discuss vaccinations since August is National Vaccination Awareness Month.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the @American-Library-Association's annual conference in Philadelphia with my publisher @BroadBookGroup. I came away energized but also sad. Our present administration has cut funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (@us-imls).

We have already seen (and may have participated in) rallies, protests and the like to fight against such cuts. We need to continue to put pressure on elected officials to ensure we have the tools we need to promote health.

This comes at a time when we see the dismantling of health care infrastructure including access to care and funding for needed services like health care innovation and research. Health care impacts each of us with maternal and newborn care topmost.

Nearly all maternal deaths are preventable with access to healthcare a key component in that survival.

Investing in maternal and newborn health (or investing in health in general), is an investment in the future, not a cost.

According to the WHO’s website, “based on currently published estimates, close to 300,000 women lose their life due to pregnancy or childbirth each year, while over 2 million babies die in their first month of life and around 2 million more are stillborn. (From NativeHope.org)”

World Health Day is celebrated each April 7, the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Today is World Health Day and the theme is Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures which focuses on maternal and newborn health. [It is also the start of National Public Health Week in the United States - more on that later this week.]

I didn't realize how much mis/disinformation is out there on this topic.
