"We are devastated and heartbroken at the loss of our parents, Melissa and Mark. They were the bright lights at the center of our lives, and we can't believe they are gone. Their love for us was boundless. We miss them so much.
"We want everyone to know that we are both safe and with loved ones. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received, and we appreciate your respect for our family's privacy as we grieve.
"Our family would like to thank law enforcement for their swift action that saved others and for the coordination across communities that led to the arrest of the man who murdered our parents. We especially would like to thank the officers who were first on the scene to our parents' home and their heroic attempts to rescue our mom and dad.
"Our parents touched so many lives, and they leave behind an incredible legacy of dedication to their community that will live on in us, their friends, their colleagues and co-workers, and every single person who knew and loved them.
"If you would like to honor the memory of Mark and Melissa, please consider the following:
β€’ Plant a tree.
β€’ Visit a local park and make use of their amenities, especially a bike trail.
β€’ Pet a dog. A golden retriever is ideal, but any will do.
β€’ Tell your loved ones a cheesy dad joke and laugh about it.
β€’ Bake something β€” bread for Mark or a cake for Melissa, and share it with someone.
β€’ Try a new hobby and enjoy learning something.
β€’ Stand up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace.
"Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. Our parents lived their lives with immense dedication to their fellow humans. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love your neighbors. Treat each other with kindness and respect. The best way to honor our parents' memory is to do something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else."

A truly moving & brave statement from Sophie and Colin Hortman, children of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark:

Earth is likely to cross a key climate threshold in two years A new World Meteorological Organization report spells the end of the world’s most famous climate goal.

Irreversible tipping points in the climate system β€” like the melting of Arctic ice sheets or the wide-scale collapse of coral reefs β€” are closer than scientists previously believed.

Her green plastic watering can
For her fake Chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic earth
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
To get rid of itself
It wears her out

A not insignificant number of humanity's problems could have been solved if someone had just stopped to consider whether they *should do* the thing that they *could do.*

FSU has experienced multiple acts of gun violence in the last 10+ years. In 2014, 3 people were injured in the library by an active shooter. In 2018, an FSU senior was killed at a yoga studio shooting off-campus. And now today, with survivors of Parkland experiencing their SECOND shooting.

I avoided being in the library for the 2014 FSU shooting by complete chance -decided to go home 30 mins before it happened even though I'd planned to be there all night. Shortly thereafter had frantic phone calls asking where I was. I *can* believe this happened again there, but I hate it so much.

There are kids on that campus who also survived the shooting at Stoneman Douglas. There are faculty on that campus who survived the last shooting at the FSU library in 2015. This is an epidemic and the solution is not more guns. We are traumatizing an entire society and it is completely unnecessary.

I am enormously grateful to the 91 Georgetown Law professors for their decision to speak directly to students in support of the rule of law, and a special thank you to Professors Buzbee, Lopez, Sloan, Feinerman, Butler, Spann, and Wishnick, all of whom I've been privileged to learn from at GULC.
