I hadn’t. After a tournament like that they should be pouring money into the women’s game. It’s genuinely exciting and in its way the equal of the men’s game. I dread to think of the disparity in spend between the two. So much so I’m going to look it up!

Has anyone else noticed how social media has rapidly morphed into antisocial media?

The Committee note that Democracy is in retreat across the the world, stating “more and more authoritarian regimes are challenging norms" and turning to violence…. “rule of law abused by those in control, free media silenced, critics imprisoned”

Oblique but effective words.

What a calm, clever and independent bunch they are in Norway.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Maria Corina Machado, for her struggle for democracy in Venezuela.

She’s been in hiding for over a year.

It doesn’t say that people who do things just to win the Prize should be excluded. It’s our own moral coding that is telling us there’s something innately wrong about that

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded (for the year ending 31st Jan, by the way) to a person or organisation who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

Totally agree, although I wouldn’t use such pejorative terms. But that doesn’t mean anyone is better. Yes, all of us are flawed, but our politicians could at least try!

Oh Lordy. We seem quite close to a 1981 ‘go back to your constituencies….’ moment. We’ve seen swings like this before. Please let’s keep perspective.

With respect (and I’m UK based and just an observer here) the point being made is that we might, all of us, seek to elect politicians who exercise the highest moral standards, as we might expect from those around us in everyday life, and not flawed individuals who are simply ‘not so bad’ as others.

I think you maybe should read my post again. I assumed nothing of the sort; merely that people on both sides of an argument (whatever that may be) are able to see evil and goodness in others’ actions.

And there it is. A dramatic twist of my words. It is in all people’s gift to understand the suffering of others. Religion, politics are irrelevant.

I think people are well able to discern between good and evil on both sides of the argument. But in the same city as the attack, I truly hope the wicked loss of life just down the road was in the minds of those that took part.

Having just returned from Italy, where armed police are a visible, integral and comforting part of everyday life, is it not time here in the UK for our police to give our communities the same comfort?

To be fair he hardly touched on any policy issues in his speech. I wouldn’t overplay it. Starmer knows that grass root opinions have swung onto immigration and that’s a huge threat to Labour votes. It’s uncomfortable for him, possibly counter intuitive, but he won’t leave it alone. He can’t.

And Switzerland. This is now a huge issue to voters up and down the length of the UK. One that deserves debate beyond the political elate, who risk proving yet again how out of touch they can be.

Lib Dems are being too divisive with this stance. Personal identification processes held centrally exist everywhere in our lives without issue. And across the rest of the world. Always being staunchly against it doesn’t make you right.

Lib Dem’s are badly missing the target with this stance. Europe has 200m ID cards in use. The issue needs careful consideration, not knee-jerk responses.

It’s all a bit daft. I was going to say beyond the pale but that would just introduce another unwelcome context 😂
